With NSCAD University’s Film School, AFCOOP will co-present two documentary screenings during the month of March.
SCREENING 1
“Blood and Water” Directed by Rohan Fernando (2007, 78 Minutes)
Tuesday March 6th, 9AM
NSCAD Academy Building, 1649 Brunswick Street, Theatre Room 208
Special Guest director Rohan Fernando. Screening will be followed by an artist talk.
When the 2004 tsunami hit the coast of Sri Lanka, 65-year-old Anton Ambrose’s wife and daughter were killed. ‘In five minutes,” he says, “I lost everything.” A year later, Anton returns to Sri Lanka. With him is his nephew, award-winning filmmaker Rohan Fernando. “Blood and Water” is the story one man’s search for meaning in the face of overwhelming loss. But it is also filled with improbable characters, unintentional comedy and situational ironies.
SCREENING 2
“Death By Popcorn” Directed by L’Atelier National du Manitoba (2006, 65 Minutes)
Thursday, March 22nd, 7PM
NSCAD Academy Building, 1649 Brunswick Street, Theatre Room 208
Peppered with action-packed cameos by Winnipeg All-Stars Dale Hawerchuk, Burton Cummings, Teemu Selanne, Billy Van and a recent interview with the man who sent the Jets straight into the jaws of death by throwing a cataclysmic box of popcorn onto the ice in Game 6 of the 1990 playoff series, “Death by Popcorn” follows the ill-fated Jets through their many travails with arch-enemies Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, soul-crushing NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and many other agents of Winnipeg annihilation. Sadness on ice.
Both screenings co-presented by NSCAD University and AFCOOP with the participation of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
