First Fl!cks is an educational outreach activity designed to provide Nova Scotia youth with an introduction to filmmaking that is fun, easy and accessible to underserved communities throughout the province.
First Fl!cks focuses on providing a positive learning experience for youth identified as underserved, encouraging participants to develop their own unique voice. Using Super-8 film equipment, participants learn basic camera operation, lighting, script, story-boards, and directing, while creating their own short film.
First Fl!cks provides schools, community organizations, libraries, and other similar institutions with an easy to arrange, fun and constructive workshop at no cost to the hosting institution.
The Workshop
Using Super-8 film equipment, participants learn basic camera operation, lighting, script, story-boards, directing and learn the difference between film and video. They also watch short films made by other Nova Scotia filmmakers, and are encouraged to comment on and critically disassemble the films as a learning exercise.
During the workshop they will script and shoot a three minute (1 film reel) long silent film, working in small groups. We use silent black & white film because it provides the maximum challenge for the aspiring filmmakers while conceiving their film. These are limitations which they must overcome creatively while still retaining the coherence of their project. While often initially taken aback by these limits, they always find the process of dealing with them exciting.
Once the film returns from the lab, a second session takes place where the participants watch their film(s). They are again encouraged to discuss the films and consider their level of satisfaction with the results.
The Program
Workshops are scheduled in conjunction with host organizations throughout the year, from August – March. The First Fl!cks program is completed for this year. Next year’s program, First Fl!cks, animation mash-up! is slated to begin in August, 2010 and run until March 2011.
