“Directed by Women” is a professional development program for emerging female directors. It includes training and mentorship on the topics of screenwriting, directing, working with key crew, pitching and marketing, and will focus on the challenges inherent in transitioning from shorts to features. The final component of the program will include organized networking opportunities at the Women Making Waves conference in March 2016.
The program will be taught by leading industry professionals, including Wiebke Von Carolsfeld, Shandi Mitchell, Becky Parsons, Jan Miller and Kim McTaggart.
AFCOOP and WIFT-AT received a large number of applications to this program and through a peer jury process, the following eight filmmakers and projects were selected for development:
Sarah Gignac, Murder on Ice
Lorna Kirk, House on the Hill
Koumbie, Good Bi
Jenna MacMillan, Gran Bandit
Nicole Steeves, Getaway!
Kristen Swinkels, Immaculate
Jackie Torrens, Skate Country
Heather Young, Puck Bunny
It is clear from the number of applications received that this type of initiative is needed in the Atlantic film community. AFCOOP and WIFT-AT plan to use “Directed by Women” as a pilot program for future iterations of this type of programming. The program is funded by generous support from Arts Nova Scotia.
