At the early stages of filmmaking, grants are the lifeblood of many projects. While it can be intimidating to navigate the various funding bodies, the grant application process shouldn’t be an obstacle to creating your work, but a way to bring it to life. With a bit of guidance, you can tap into what you bring to the table as a filmmaker and how to express this through your application materials. In this workshop with instructor Brandon Lorimer, we’ll cover the anatomy of a grant, funding avenues available to you, best practices for grants at large, and a healthy approach to the stress of application season.

Brandon (he/him) is an artist and arts journalist from Kjipuktuk/Halifax. An alumnus of the Bus Stop Theatre Playwrights Unit, Montréal Playwrights Workshop, and AFCOOP’s Film 5 Program, his primary artistic practice encompasses film, theatre, and interactivity. Brandon is head of Wolf Hart Productions, a film company creating works that speak to our modern struggle; it debuted its first short DWELLING at the 2023 Third Watch Festival. He enjoys existential hope, absurd dread, and Arizona green tea.
