How to Survive Anything: a collective documentary project

A Celebration of our Capacity to Overcome – DEADLINE EXTENDED till June 8th

AFCOOP is seeking submissions from the community for a collaborative documentary that shows people engaged in acts of resilience, humanity and creativity during these strange and difficult times. We’re asking for scenes that show what you are doing in response to the fear, the stress and the turbulence with the goal of collectively building a documentary AND an archive.

An inordinate amount of time is and will naturally be committed to capturing the trials and tribulations of 2020. That’s the job of the mainstream media. As documentarians / filmmakers our job is to reflect nuance and the quieter truths so they are not lost or forgotten. In many ways this project is not about WHAT is happening, but HOW humans are responding.

How to Participate:

This project is a collaboration from beginning to end. You can film your scene, but you can also participate in the edit, watch rough cuts, and offer advice.

The Scene:

It could be a new project you’ve taken on, like learning Sweet Home Alabama on the Banjo, or a rather mundane one like organizing your closets. Maybe it’s something you never imagined doing such as looking for love online and building a garden from seed and scratch. We want to see just what it is that’s giving you meaning and find out why.

We’re asking for one scene (under 3 minutes of footage edited) that shows you in action. We want to experience the gestures, words and moments that transport us into the scene. Try not to do interviews, because after you’ve captured the footage you can provide up a minute of commentary to tell us who you are, where you live and why this has so much meaning for you.
