AFCOOP Is Hiring! — Executive Director

Rate of Pay: $50,000 per year (plus benefits listed below)
Hours: Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm*
Location: AFCOOP Office, 1531 Grafton Street, Halifax/Kjipuktuk, Nova Scotia

AFCOOP is looking for a new Executive Director to lead the operations of our vibrant production, training and resource centre for independent filmmakers. Founded in 1974, AFCOOP is a non-profit, community organization dedicated to supporting the production and presentation of independent film and moving-image based work in a collaborative, learning environment. AFCOOP is located in Kjipuktuk in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. AFCOOP is committed to creating a welcoming space and affordable activities and opportunities for all people, and to breaking down barriers to access for under-represented and equity-seeking groups.

The successful candidate will be someone with a knowledge of and a passion for artist-run culture and a background in filmmaking and connection to the film community in Nova Scotia. AFCOOP’s Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the organization’s finances, staffing, operations, community and government relationships and the overall development and implementation of AFCOOP’s mandate. They are responsible for all staffing decisions including managing two full-time staff and multiple contract and part-time employees and they oversee all of AFCOOP’s activities including the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival. 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Leadership

  • Continuing to lead the organization in vital transformation informed by justice, equity, diversity and inclusion;

  • Developing the organization’s vision and values in concert with the board and staff and articulating this vision to the members, funders and the public;

  • Enacting the objectives of the organization through programming decisions, resource allocation, policy development and staffing structure;

  • Continuing the work of AFCOOP’s Safer Spaces Committee in promoting a survivor centric response to complaints related to misconduct and;

  • Engaging AFCOOP’s membership at quarterly General Meetings and through periodic membership emails, newsletters and frequent one-on-one meetings.

Operational and Financial Management

  • Researching and writing grant applications for government funders, foundations and other cultural institutions;

  • Financial management and resource allocation including budgeting, cash flow, bookkeeping, payroll, year-end reporting and monthly reports to the Board of Directors;

  • Supervising sponsorship retention and development and researching new funding sources and potential revenue generating streams;

  • Hiring, training and supervising staff, interns and volunteers and;

  • Overseeing and strategizing media and public relations, social media and graphic design.

Whenever possible AFCOOP strives to hire practicing filmmakers and artists.

AFCOOP offers:
As a full-time staff person the successful candidate will have access to AFCOOP’s free staff equipment rental policy, five paid days off per year to work on their own film, four weeks of vacation (two weeks during the Holiday office closure in Dec./Jan and two weeks of their choosing), professional development opportunities and health benefits. 

*Note about hours: the AFCOOP permanent staff have moved to a 4 day work week (Tuesday – Friday). This position will be 5 days / week for the first year and then will go down to  4 days / week (with no reduction in pay) after the successful completion of the first annual performance review.
