MARTHA COOLEY

Martha Cooley is a filmmaker and cultural worker based in Kijipuktuk / Halifax. Originally from Ontario, she completed an undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University and went on to attend the NSCC’s Screen Arts program. Her career at AFCOOP began in 2007 in the role of Programs and Membership Coordinator, and she transitioned to the ED role in 2013. She has sat on the boards of Women in Film and Television – Atlantic and Screen Nova Scotia. She is a founding board member of the Light House Arts Centre and the current treasurer of the Independent Media Arts Alliance. 

As a filmmaker Martha produced her first feature film, MURMUR (2019), with writer/director Heather Young. MURMUR premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize for the Discovery Programme, and went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival and a Canadian Screen Award for Best First Feature. In addition to being a filmmaker, she’s an aspiring writer, sings in a choir and has a toy poodle named Marzipan who can occasionally be found at the office.

Iain is a filmmaker and adult educator who has been active in the Nova Scotia film community for over 20 years. A graduate of the Canadian Film Centre, he has written and directed both short and feature films and worked as a television writer for nearly a decade. A former AFCOOP member and vice chair of the board, he has worked at AFCOOP in various capacities since 2017 and is especially keen on participatory filmmaking projects and the mentoring of screenwriters. Iain continues to make his own films.

Abner Collette is a Trans filmmaker living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a graduate of Vancouver Film School and the writer, director, and producer of several independent fictional and documentary short films. Abner’s short film ‘SURFACES’ can be found in Season 6 of Reel East Coast on CBC Gem. They are currently working on a short documentary entitled SPECTRUM(S), which explores the established scientific link between gender identity and neurodivergence. Abner looks forward to continuing his creative and professional development in his home Atlantic region.

Evan is a writer, reporter and film programmer living in Dartmouth, NS. Previously, he served as Lunenburg Doc Fest’s media coordinator and as an arts reporter on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. He recently completed his first novel through Humber College’s School for Writers.
